Foundations for Implementing Root Cause Analysis

How do you know when there’s a problem in a given situation? Once discovered, how do you approach solving the problem? In this course, you’ll be provided basic steps for how to define a problem and an approach for solving that problem using a proven methodology. You’ll explore how a problem can be viewed as an opportunity for improvement and how a solution to a problem can be leveraged within different areas of your organization.

Effective problem solving isn’t just a quality function, and it’s not just for operations or engineering. Effective problem solving is a valuable skill set needed throughout an organization. By working through a plausible scenario, you’ll assess your own problem-solving skills and experience how tempting it is to jump to solutions or try to fix the problem without investigating and understanding all the underlying causes. Though sometimes effective in the short-term, jumping to solutions can be unreliable, wasting time, money, and effort. Instead, you’ll be introduced to a formal problem-solving approach for finding root causes and implementing effective and lasting solutions that eliminate the problem.

The course concludes by emphasizing the need for problem-solving teams and providing an opportunity for you to practice creating a team that will investigate a sample problem. Here, you’ll explore the different roles and responsibilities utilized when solving problems using a structured approach.

Objectives

By participating in this on-demand course, you’ll be able to:

  • Define “problem” and be able to recognize a problem in a given scenario
  • Summarize the importance of seeing problems as opportunities and the resultant effects of this approach
  • Explain why a structured approach helps to solve problems
  • Recite the eight-step process used for problem solving and summarize how each step contributes to solving a problem
  • Summarize roles and responsibilities associated with a structured problem-solving approach
  • Recognize a need for a work team, construct an effective team, and define roles and responsibilities within the team

Open Source Software Development: Linux for Developers (LFD107x)

The course surveys how open source software works, including advantages of using it, methods of working in OSS communities, governance models, and licensing choices. It delves into Linux systems, including installation, desktop environments, text editors, important commands and utilities, command shells and scripts, filesystems, and compiling software.

This course prepares you with the knowledge and understanding to construct a coherent open source strategy for an organization. You will gain an understanding of the aspects related to open source software licensing, compliance, collaboration, inclusivity, and diversity. Upon completing this course, you should be able to work comfortably and productively in open source development communities and Linux environments.

Design for Additive Manufacturing: Towards End-Part Production Web Seminar RePlay

Additive manufacturing (AM), with origins in the 1980s, has only more recently emerged as a manufacturing process of choice for functional part production, adding to the suite of choices a designer has available when designing a part for manufacturing. Like other traditional processes like casting and machining, AM has its set of constraints. An added layer of complexity comes from the fact that there are several different AM processes, and some of the design constraints are process-specific. On the other hand, AM offers a range of opportunities in design freedom and mass customization as well as in cost and lead time reduction in some cases. Today, it is essential for designers to embrace AM as a possible manufacturing method to ensure their products are competitive and also to unlock the design innovation that AM enables.

The goal of this 10-hour course is to give designers the information needed to start designing for AM at all levels – identifying and justifying use of AM technology for a particular part, selecting the right process and material for the application and ensuring it is designed with the advantages and considerations of AM in mind. The course is not intended to serve as a software-training class or as a deep dive into any specific AM process, but rather to draw connections between design and AM from a designer’s perspective.

Objectives

By participating in this course, you’ll be able to:

  • List the different polymer and metal AM process technologies and materials and identify which of these are being used for functional part production
  • Select the optimum AM material and process for a particular application
  • Predict how design decisions impact manufacturability for the selected AM process and apply design rules and guidelines to your design process
  • Quantify the expected properties of the AM parts you are designing
  • Discover how topology optimization, cellular structures and other disruptive design techniques can be leveraged with AM and associated software tools
  • Identify the different drivers for adopting AM for a particular part, with regard to cost, lead time, supply chain and performance risks
  • Relate to the challenges and ongoing research efforts to be able to move forward with AM implementation in the presence of rapid change in the field
  • Develop a comprehensive strategy to bring AM for functional part production into your organization that addresses both the benefits and impacts
