What is an operating system?

An operating system (OS) is software that acts as an interface between the computer’s hardware components and the user. Every computer system must have at least one operating system to run other programs.

The OS helps you communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer’s language. It is not possible for a user to use any computer or mobile device without an operating system.

What operating systems do we know?

Microsoft Windows (also referred to as Windows or Win) is a graphical operating system developed and published by Microsoft. It provides a way to store files, run software, play games, watch videos, and connect to the Internet.

Linux is the most famous and widely used open source operating system. Linux sits “underneath” all the other software on the computer, receiving requests from those programs and relaying those requests to the computer’s hardware.
